Device Management in Operating System ?

Functions of Device Management ?

Device Management Involves Four Basic Functions :-

  • Monitoring the standing of every Device like a Storage Drives, Printers and alternative Peripheral Devices.
  • Enforcing planned Policies to work out that method can get a tool and the way long;
  • Allocating the Devices;
  • Deallocating them at 2 levels :-

At the method level, once AN I/O command has been dead and therefore the device is quickly released;

At the work level, once the work is finished and therefore the device is for good discharged.

Understand by Dedicated Devices ?

The devices that area unit assigned for less than one job at a time area unit known as dedicated devices. from the name only, we tend to get that dedicated devices area unit assigned for a frenzied work. these dedicated devices run the complete time serving only one job once it’s active. Example of Dedicated devices are follows – Tape Drives, Plotters and Printers. These Kind of Dedicated Devices are easy to use, but they take a lot of time to execute a list of commands, since they work each command at a time.

Disadvantages of Dedicated Devices ?

  1.  With the advent of more efficient device management, it is easy for the system to assign multiple jobs for the Central Processing Unit or the CPU. Intelligent multitasking reduces operating time and speeds up the system without heavy loading on the CPU. As we Know that Dedicated Devices are Assigned for only one job at a time , it slows down the whole process.
  2. Another disadvantage of the dedicated devices exist the sector that solely one user is allotted to them throughout the period of the complete job’s execution. this prevents usage of multiple users that isn’t of fine value.
  3. Also During a single job, another work cannot be assigned to a dedicated devices. A Dedicated Device. a zealous devices can take future job till and unless the previous job has been dead. of these results in the formation of job queue that takes up vital memory areas within the Random Access Memory or RAM speed down the complete System.

Understand by Shared Devices ?

Shared Devices are the devices that can be assigned to several processes. For Example, a disk (DASD) are often shared by many processes at identical time by interleaving their requests. This interleaving should be carefully controlled by the Device Manager. All conflicts must be resolved based on Predetermined Policies. Shared Devices can be used and accessed by many people at the same time with help of LAN or Local Area Network in any workplace. there are several examples through which this sharing process can be possible. those are shared printer, shared scanner, shared files or documents and so on.

Understand by Virtual Devices ?

Virtual devices are dedicated devices which are transformed into shared devices through the technique of spooling. Example, Printers and faxes use spooling technique by rerouting all the print requests to a disk. The Printer receives output only when the output is complete and the printer is ready to print out the entire documents. so we get that a virtual device is the combination of the other kind of devices, namely dedicated devices and shared devices. The virtual devices are generally used for memory management, when a huge process comes and there is not enough memory available, at that time these virtual devices is useful. there is no general method to install the virtual devices. virtual devices eliminate the nice points from a bunch of network specific appliances. Since disks are sharable Devices, the spooling technique can convert the printer into virtual device or virtual printer, enhancing its performance manifolds.

Advantages of Virtual Devices ?

  1. There will be no need to have a second system, while testing the operating system.
  2. All generic hardware found in other PC will be provided by the Virtual Machine.
  3. More enhance user experience.
  4. Very Good Quality of service.

The most important advantage of all is that the virtual device manages to retain best of both the dedicated devices and shared devices. Virtual devices can complete several works at a time without creating pressure on the system.

Understand by Storage Devices ?

Storage devices are very important components of any computer system and these days, most of the advanced computer systems are making use of a variety of storage devices to enhance their functions to a remarkable standard.

The Storage devices are nothing but very special devices that are used to store the data and information for longer period of time. This storage of data can be very safe and the users can find it much easy to use this data later on as well.

The Most Common Storage Devices :-

Today, the most common devices for storage of data and information can include Floppy Disks, Compact Disks Recordable (CD + R), Compact Disks Rewriteable (CD+ RW), DVD+RW, DVD+R and ZIP Disks. These is no doubt that most of these devices for storing data and information are extremely dependable. However, they often run into the risk of getting affected by viruses and other malfunctioning of the computer system. these devices are available with multiple storage capacities. these are also available in recordable and re- recordable versions, which are certainly good for the users.

Advanced And Uncommon Storage Devices :-

With the development of more and more advanced machines, the storage devices are also getting better and better these days. At present, the users are using various types of newer devices for storing their data for future use. The most uncommon and newer storage devices include Removable Hard Drive, PC Cards, Smart cards, Smart Media, Memory Sticks and Storage Tapes. These Devices are available in larger capacities and that is why the users are finding these devices for storage more economic and more convenient. As a result of better services and facilities, these storage devices are getting more popularity these days.
